The Kapitan Keling Mosque is one of the largest Mosques in the island making it one of the must visit Penang attractions. It’s one of those mosques that are practically loved by everyone because of its historical significance which is a constant reminder to all. Named after the man who started building this structure, Cauder Mydin Merican in 1801, the structure has seen significant changes during the early 20th century which has greatly influenced what it is today. The structure was built in the middle of Little India for significant reasons. Merican is an Indian and was considered the leader of the Indian community.
Originally the land area where the mosque is situated covers more than 18 hectares. Because of constant development, it has been reduced to eight hectares only. But that doesn’t mean the grandeur of the mosque was reduced. In 2005, it has received support from the government for restoration for Penang Tourism and culture. For tourists who are non-Muslims who want to enter the mosque, a special permission from the government should be obtained.
