The construction of Snake Temple was finished in 1805. This structure was built in commemoration of the monk named the Chor Soo Kong. The monk lived in Penang during the 13th century and was believed to have healing powers and closeness to the snakes as he gives them shelter. After the building was opened to the public, vipers started to come to this temple which was believed to be the servants of the great monk.
The building is considerably smaller now because of the urbanization of the area but still one of the best Penang attractions. Even with the development, the vipers still lives there. When they first came to the temple it was believed that they also serve the monk and never touched the tourists. Although this was believed, all the vipers are devenomed to ensure safety for the tourists and worshippers. There’s also a booth there that will give the tourists and locals a chance to be pictured with the vipers which is one of the most memorable things to do in Penang.
