Although Malaysia is not primarily a Christian country, it has its fair share of remarkable churches which has become one of the Penang attractions. Among them is St. Anne Church. The first structure was constructed as early as 1888. However, during the 50s the structure was demolished. The government apparently suspected the church to be part of the communist activities the country. The reconstructed church was finished in 1957 which is even more beautiful. The white washed church since then has been the center of Catholic religious activities in Penang. Surrounding the church are ancient relics believed to have been from the 4th century – long before the church was built in the same site.
Every year, during the feast day of St. Anne, thousands come here to participate in a procession of candles which is one of the well-known religious activities in Penang. More than 200,000 attend this yearly activity. The highlight of the festivities is the candle light procession which is participated by the devotees for the Saint.
