One of the most beautiful landmarks in Penang, St. George Anglican Church is also the oldest Anglican Church not only in the country but also in Southeast Asia. The first pillar of the structure was built in 1816 and two years later, the church was opened to the public. This white washed church features modern architecture with impressive pillars that support the structure. Just outside the church within the grounds is the Francis Light Memorial. Francis Light is known to have established the island in 1786 during the British ruling.
The main reason why it's still one of the top Penang attractions until today is because the structure stands as it was many years ago. For nearly 200 years, the structure was preserved and looked even beautiful in the present day. Strong participation of the locals has practically helped conserve the structure. Tourists are welcome and highly encouraged to visit the church and the grounds as part of the activities in Penang. As it is located in Farquhar Street, it’s strikingly close to other important religious structures in the island which are also worth visiting.
