The City Hall, located right beside the Town Hall is one of the historical landmarks of the country. Considered to be the national monument, the structure was built in 1903 using the traditional British architecture. Compared to the Town Hall, the City Hall is a little bit bigger but together they constitute a picturesque combination of original British architecture which is one of the most popular sights of Penang. In front of the structure is an open lawn where tourists can position to take pictures of the two important structures of the island.
The main purpose of the structure is to hold the meeting of the city officials. The City Hall is also home two important departments: Urban Services and Licensing. After 100 years, the City Hall is nearly at its ruins and so restoration is in place. From 2004 to 2005, the structure was placed under renovation. Today, it has reclaimed its grandeur not only in its function but also in its structural beauty as it became part of the long line of Penang attractions.
