Batu Caves is one of the hidden treasures of the Malaysia. Barely 15 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur, the caves are home to the Hindu locals’ places of worship. Even before it was popularized by foreign travelers as one of the Kuala Lumpur attractions, locals came to regard this place as holy and started to build places of worship inside of it, particularly the Hindus. Today, all three major caves are used as temples of the Hindus. In these caves you’ll also find the gigantic structure of Lord Murugan which was unveiled to the public in 2006. Lord Murugan is a Hindu God of War.
If you want to see the full grandeur of this place, be sure to visit here during the months of January or February. It is during these months that the locals celebrate the yearly Thaipusam festival. There are audio tours available for a price for a better understanding. Prepare to climb more than 250 steps of stairs before reaching the caves which is one of the most challenging tourist activities in Kuala Lumpur. On the way you’ll be able to see smaller caves and more often than not, monkeys.
