One of the famous sights of Kuala Lumpur, Dataran Merdeka used to be the cricket grounds during the British colonial times (called the Selangor Club Padang) during the end of the 19th century. Its status was practically changed in 1957 when the Malaysian flag was first raised. It was the sign of independence which eventually sealed the role of Dataran Merdeka as the country’s point of independence. Every year, the culmination of the country’s Independence Day is held in this square. In this place you’ll find a 100 meter flag pole. The Malaysian flag is always hoisted in this flag pole which is considered to be one of the tallest in the world which is a great asset for Kuala Lumpur tourism.
There are many popular Kuala Lumpur landmarks that surround Dataran Merdeka. Right in front of the square is the highly intricate Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Tourists will practically love to visit this place as this is the focal point of different historical structures.
