Balzan is a small village in the centre of the Island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea. Originally just a tiny group of houses and farmsteads, the village has grown since the 17th century and now has around 3,400 inhabitants. There are 2 trains of thought with regard to the origin of the name of the village, one which claims it to be of Arabic origin, and the other that it was named after a Sicilian family who used to live in the area where Balzan is now situated. Close to the main square, in the oldest part of the village, the visitor will come across an area known as Three Churches Street. Actually grouped around an old cemetery cross, the churches are the Annunciation of Our Lady, St Leonard’s and Little St Roque. The latter, built during a terrible plague in 1593 and named after the patron saint of plague, is an unsophisticated building but does contain some nice detail. St Leonard’s no longer functions as a church and is instead now used as a dwelling.
Situated right at the centre of Malta Island, Balzan is an ideal place to stay. EasyToBook.com offers discount accommodation at hotels in the village, from where the rest of the island is easily accessible. The capital city, Valletta, is only 5kms from your hotel in Balzan, and is located on the island’s northeast coast. For those interested in the history and religion of the island, Valletta offers a vast number of churches and museums. The Armory Museum is particularly interesting and contains a unique collection of Renaissance weaponry and armor, whilst the Manoel Theatre Museum presents the history of the first playhouse in Valletta, thought to be one of the oldest in the whole of Europe. For those with a less cultural agenda in mind, Republic Street is Malta’s main shopping centre, and here you will find cafés, restaurants and hotels where you can take a break and just relax.
