The commercial hub of Victoria is commonly known as it-Tokk and is the location of the Citadel which is a secure point whose origins lie in the later part of the medieval era. This was reinforced by the Knights of the Order of St. John in order to protect the inhabitants. Over the centuries pirates and corsairs used the small harbors in Gozo as shelters during the times they were raiding the island trying to find fresh produce and water.

Within the walls of the Citadel you will find the cathedral that was designed by Lorenzo Gafa. When it was constructed, money was extremely short so no dome was erected. The Cathedral Museum is also located inside the Citadel and includes vestments and silver and gold items that maintain their places in sacred services. The Citadel also contains the Archaeological Museum, the Natural history Museum, as well as the Folklore Museum.
