The parish church of St. George traces its origin to a period prior to 1450 when the first records show its functionality as a parish church. The original church was smaller than the one we know today and was destroyed by the Turks in July 1551. Although the functionality of the original church was restored most of the way, a new and more lavish church was built in 1672 and consecrated in 1755.

The frontage of the resent church was rebuilt in 1818.During the same time enlargement was made to the interior. The title of Basilica was bestowed upon the church in September 1958 and became part of the Cathedral-Basilica of San Giovanni Laterano in 1976. Its main attraction is an 1838 wooden sculpture of its patron saint. The church also includes many masterpiece paintings with the most prominent one being that of St. George, the church’s patron saint.
