The Royal Botanical Gardens of Pamplemousses, located in Mauritius, is definitely a highlight worth visiting while in this tropical paradise. These gardens were actually renamed in 1988 after the late Prime Minister Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, however locals still use the old name. It's thought the name originally came from a type of citrus plant in Mauritius called the pamplemoucier. It was actually imported by the Dutch from Java. It resembles a grapefruit hence the name pamplemousse. And the nice thing? Admission to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, Royal Botanical Gardens of Pamplemousse is free.

Take a good look around, and allow yourself about 2 hours for visiting the whole garden. The gates and white wrought iron railings won first prize in the International Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London in 1862. Interesting note: the gardens date back to 1735 when Labourdonnais purchased a house in the grounds. He called the location Mon Plaisir and it started out its life as a humble vegetable garden, which morphed over time into a stop for fresh food for ships holding over at Port Louis. Be sure to take your camera.
