Who would have thought that finding out all about how to make sugar could be classified as an adventure? It can if you take the really fascinating tour of the Sugar Museum/The Sugar Adventure located in Grand Baie, Mauritius. This is one really entertaining museum for everyone in your family, especially the kids. The whole island of Mauritius is literally built on sugar. It all started in 1638 when the Dutch arrived and started producing sugar cane on plantations. When the French arrived in 1715 the continued the tradition as did the British when they took possession in 1810.

Most of the plantations were worked by slave labor from Africa or India. Over time, the term slave labor was replaced by indentured laborer but the term meant the same thing. Thanks to this cultural mix, the island of Maritius is trilingual and offers extraordinary cuisine. Interesting note: There are really only about a handful of still functioning sugar factories. A far cry from the original 400! The Sugar Museum is at home in the old sugar mill of Beau Plan – a huge 5,000 square meter building. What a fantastic museum offering original machinery, film, video, pictures, working models and much more. Do not leave without trying the different flavors of sugar. In particular try the local delicacy called Soft Pale Brown. Hmmmm! Luscious!
