Mahébourg, located on the southern coast of Mauritius, was named after a successful governor of the area during French rule. Mahébourg has a diverse cultural background, and the sites around the city display the remnants of French, Dutch, and British colonial periods. An excellent showcase of this background is the National History Museum, located in an 18th century Creole mansion. The museum displays the history of all the colonial periods, as well as relics of past shipwrecks from naval battles. The Monument at Mahébourg, a landmark located at the scenic waterfront, stands in memory of just such a battle between the French and British navies. Architecture enthusiasts should visit Notre Dame des Anges, a restored church and an excellent example of colonial design.
