Perhaps the largest, and many would argue, the best, place in all of Mexico City to look at, admire, and buy beautiful, handcrafted works from local Mexican artists would have to be Fonart. This store is actually funded by the government, through the National Fund for the Promotion of Handicrafts. The fact that a government organization is dedicated to handicrafts should serve as evidence of just how vital and important handcrafted art is to Mexican culture and the Mexican economy.

Besides just the local Mexican artistry on display here, you’ll also find work from around the entire country, from the Olinala lacquered boxes to the alebrijes, these being papier-mache monster dolls, from Oaxaca. You’ll find blankets from Teotitlan del Valle and pottery and glassware from everywhere. While haggling is common in the outdoor art fairs and bazars you find on the streets, the prices here are fixed, but are said to be reasonable (whereas the higher prices of outdoor fairs are generally meant to be bargained down).
