Established by congress in 1851, the Mexico City National Cemetary honors the American casualties of the Mexican-American War of 1847. A total of about 1,563 American solders were buried here, with 750 being unidentified. These unidentified solders are commemorated with a common grave, inscribed with the words: “To the honored memory of 750 Americans known but to God, whose bones collected by their country’s orders are here buried.”
