Hotels near Palacio Nacional - Best deals & budget rates!

Guessing alone can translate the title of Palacio Nacional into “The National Palace”, and even less surprising than its English meaning, the purpose of the building is to house the offices of the President of Mexico, as well as the Federal Treasury. The building is a fascinating place to visit even if you don’t have any business with the President. Tours are given on occassion, where you can observe the incredible murals of Diego Rivera. Above the entrance, you’ll see the ‘Campana de Dolores’, the very bell rung in the town of Dolores Hidalgo by Padre Miguel Hidalgo, which sounded the start of the Mexican War of Independence in 1810.

Originally, this spot held a palace for Aztec emperor Moctezuma II in the early 16th century (though the exact date of the original temple’s construction is unknown). Hernan Cortes won the site in battle, though, and destroyed the original palace, then replaced it with the current palace in 1521.
