At the center of Mexico City sits the Great Square, also called the Center Square, but most commonly called, by Mexico City locals that is, the Zocalo. Experienced travelers will tell you that the Zocalo is not just part of Mexico City, the Zocalo, really, IS Mexico City. The Zocalo serves as a hub where people gather for social events, as well as center stage for the many festivals and celebrations the city holds throughout the year (which are plentiful). Besides these, the Zocalo also serves significant political purpose as people gather for national holidays, political rallies and for protest.
To simply describe the Zocalo, it is an expansive concrete area with a large Mexican flag. The square is surrounded with small markets and businesses like cafes, restaurants and even a hat shop. Besides which, there is also an old fashioned Cathedral, serving as a point of interest for the theologist or history lover.
