The legend of Playas Las Gatas, on Zihuatanejo Bay, is that it was the playground of ancient Mexican royalty, having been created as a safe place for an ancient Mexican Indian princess to swim in privacy. Named for the harmless cat shark (though there are no sharks there today), a round trip can cost as little as five dollars, and the man-made reef is favored by many travelers for its lack of highways and high rise hotels. The beautiful, natural landscape is known as the best snorkeling spot in Zihuatanejo. You can rent some scuba gear here (you can also obtain instruction and certification) and view the wide variety of aquatic wildlife at your leisure.

At the far end of the beach you’ll find Owen Lee’s Las Gatas Beach Club, this part of the reef is said to be the best for surfing. The waves are sometimes on the small side, but at the right time of day, Playa Las Gatas is as good a surfing spot as any.
