Mismaloya, a small village on the Pacific coast of Mexico, is located on Bahía de Banderas, a short 15-minute drive south of Puerto Vallarta. Fishing, swimming, sunbathing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and nature watching dominate the activities in this tranquil, out-of-the way tropical vacation setting. Mismaloya may look somewhat familiar to you, as it is where Night of the Iguana was filmed in 1963. The ruins of the set still remain on a hill rising up from Mismaloya Cove. Several scenes in the movie Predator were filmed nearby as well, in a jungle setting called El Eden, across Highway 200 from Playa Mismaloya and a short and rustic drive up the Mismaloya River.
From Playa Mismaloya, you can see Los Arcos, the granite formations that mark the location of Los Arcos Underwater National Park, a federal ecopreserve. You can easily hire a boat or tour guide to take you there for snorkeling and scuba diving. The park is the site of rich marine life, including eels, octopus, lobster, and rays. Most interesting is the underwater topography. From a depth of 60 feet or so, the sea floor drops to 1800 hundred feet down a sheer wall into an abyss.
