Besides the many beautiful cathedrals and chapels found throughout the city, Sayula is also a gracious host to a wide variety of wild celebrations all year round, one of the most well known amongst these is the Carnaval. Carnaval translates into English as, to nobody’s surprise, Carnival, and that’s a fine title for this festivity. At the Carnaval, visitors will go through a crash course in the Mexican culture specific to the state of Jalisco, the Guadalajara area, and the city, Sayula, itself. Beloved traditions are on display here in full color, as well as traditional dancing, music and other art forms. The Carnaval is a celebration that is absolutely steeped in the rich heritage of Mexican culture

For further information, the Spanish language book Memoria Grafica del Carnaval en Sayula is a loving history of the Carnaval, with dozens of photographs of past Carnival Queens. The book might be hard to come by, though.
