The Plaza de Toros is all about bullfighting. Bullfighting, or “toreo”, is one of Mexico’s proudest traditions. We all know that Spain is the country responsible for bringing bullfighting to Mexico, France and Portugal, but before it became popular in Spain, it is unknown where it truly originated. Many credit bullfighting to the Visigoths, while others theorize that there is a link to the Crete culture.
Either way, the world of bullfighting has grown into a national sport and a field of honor. Contrary to common misconceptions, the spectators of a bullfight do not, usually; show up to see blood or violence, but rather, the grace, confidence and courage of the bullfighter. The spectacle does culminate in the death of the bull, however, the matador himself puts his life on the line every time he steps into the arena, as well. Certainly there are those that find the sport objectionable, but for those who see the honor and dignity of the bullfight, the Plaza de Toros is second to none within Cancun.
