What is commonly referred to as “Tulum” actually consists of three seperate elements: A town, an archaeological zone and a beach. The Tulum ruins archaeological site is the first part you’ll see coming in on highway 307. If you miss the road signs, there’s a big pink hotel on the corner of this spot, ensuring that you couldn’t likely drive right by and overlook Tulum. Besides the ruins, there is also a large market here (and a few fast food joints, but come on, who wants to eat fast food in an exotic locale?).
The town is well equipped for any traveler, with plenty of hotels, restaurants and shops to choose from. The beach is located as such that, going north, you could swim right to nearby Boca Paila without getting tired. The famous Mayan Pole Flyers can be seen to your right on the road towards the ruins staging their performances throughout the day. All in all, Tulum is a beautiful, eventful stop that should be made by anyone who gets a chance.
