Right between Akumal and Xel-ha sits a lush, green, beautiful tropical jungle. In this jungle you’ll find the Aktun Chen caves. A cenote, in the Mayan language, is a water filled sink hole, a common sight throughout most of Yucatan. The cenotes of this cave are described as being crystal clear, clean, beautiful pools of water, and are the cave’s main selling point.
The complex, centuries old formations of stalactites (those pointy things on the ceilings of caves) and stalagmites (those pointy things on the floors of caves) are visible on an easy-level walk through of the caves. Open every day, Spanish and English speaking guides give one-hour tours through the caves. Visitors taking this tour will emerge at the end into a beautiful garden filled with rare birds, beautiful (caged) snakes and exotic animals. Thanks to the location, this is a great stop if you’re traveling from Akumal to Xel-ha or the other way around.
