Central Mexico is the core of the nation, its very heart. You will need more than a weekend to explore Central Mexico, as this region has some of the best archaeological sites to explore. There is Tula, a remnant of pre-Columbian Mexico with its Ball Courts, Pyramid, the Wall of Snakes, the Burnt Palace and its shrine. In Cuernavaca you can find the Pyramids of Teopanzolco, while in Tepoztlán there is the Pyramid of Tepozteco. In Yochitécatl you can explore the Pyramid of the Flowers, Pyramid of the Snakes, the Basement of the volcanoes and the Spiral Pyramid. If you want more than pyramids, you can go to Huamantla to see the running of the bulls, or visit the 17 gardens in Guanajuato.
