San Luis Potosí, the capital of the Mexican State of the same name, is rich in both colonial and modern architecture and art. The old buildings and landmarks in the central part of the city were influenced by Europe’s many styles of the time, and the new buildings are showcases of modern international design. The city, named after Louis IX of France, was founded in 1592 and is located in the northern area of Mexico's Central Plateau at an altitude of 6,157 feet.
