When you are visiting the Gulf of Mexico, you might want to explore the economic capital of the region by staying in a budget hotel in Tampico, Mexico. It is found in the state of Tamaulipas and is a major exporter of oil, silver, copper, lumber, and other products. The area has been inhabited for centuries. One important Huastec settlement, Las Flores, reached its high point between 1,000 and 1,250 C.E. Today’s city was founded in 1823, but its name is Huastec, meaning ‘place of otters.’ The name refers to the fact that otters have traditionally lived in the lagoons and rivers in the area.
If you stay in a discount hotel in Tampico in the downtown area, you will see quite an interesting mix of architectural styles. There are New-Orleans style balconies such as the ones on Plaza de la Libertad. Or, you’ll see neo-classical influences in the Plaza de Armas, where the Town Hall (Palacio Municipal) is found. The beautiful Temple of the Immaculate Conception, Tampico’s cathedral, is also on the Plaza de Armas. The chiming clock on the eastern tower of the cathedral was actually made in London and given to the city as a gift by Don Angel Sainz Trapaga.
