Kotor is a small town in the Kotor district of Montenegro. It is located on the Gulf of Kotor in a rather secluded corner of the tiny country. Kotor dates back to ancient times, when it was part of the Roman province of Dacia. Over the centuries it passed through the hands of numerous conquerors. Because Kotor is a seaport, backed by mountains, visitors can choose from a wide range of activities, including sailing, diving, and mountaineering. Kotor is a city with many churches, but the most beautiful of them is the 12th century St. Tryphon’s Cathedral. Among Kotor’s other old churches, all of which are worth a visit, are St. Lucas’s, Santa Anna’s, and St. Joseph’s. Be sure to visit the Drago Palace on St. Tryphon Square. It is a Gothic structure, built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Today it is the home of the Regional Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. Also see the 18th century Prince’s Palace.
