The town of Ulcinj in Montenegro is not far from the Albanian border, and so has a rich mixture of Montenegrin and Albanian cultures. It also has the longest sandy beach in the country. Velika Plaza (Big Beach) is twelve kilometers long. For dedicated sun lovers, nude bathing is allowed on part of the beach. Swimmers can also go to Mala Plaza (Small Beach), which is on a lovely little cove. Guests in budget hotels in Ulcinj may be interested to know that this town was once a notorious pirate base. Freebooters from all over the Mediterranean came here to provision their ships and squander their loot. According to legend, the writer Cervantes was once captured by pirates and held prisoner here. Many pirate captives were sold as slaves in the town square.

The Stari Grad (Old Town) is a labyrinth of defensive walls and old stone houses overlooking the sea. Some were damaged in an earthquake in 1979 and repairs are still ongoing. At the Upper Gate there is a museum where visitors can see Montenegrin and Turkish artifacts, as well as Roman ruins. The Church of St. Nicholas, with its ancient olive orchard, is also worth a visit. At the Milena canal you can watch fishermen at work with poles and nets just like the ones used by their ancestors for generations. The catch is served up in delicious dishes in local restaurants.
