Mozambique is so abundant with beautiful islands that anyone will be hard-pressed to choose which among them is really the best. One of these islands is the Xefina Grande Island, which can be found at the end of Marginal, just a short distance out to the sea. The island, which is the larger one in size of the two islands that guard the Incomati River's mouth, is one of Maputo's attractions that remain largely unspoiled until this present day.

The Xefina Grande Island may have a few traditional fisherman settlers but the lack of fresh tap water on the island has hampered any ideas of a more extensive settlement. However, this has left most parts of the island quite unpolluted. As one of the more popular of Maputo's attractions, there are cruises to the island that can be arranged at the Hotel Polana. The island also provides excellent offshore snorkeling opportunities, and it is also the home of pristine white beaches. The tumbledown ruins of the Portuguese fort from the middle of the 16th century that can be found in the island is also worthy of a visit by those who are interested in historical buildings.
