The Praca Independencia or the Independence Square has some of the best attractions in Maputo, and one of these is the Conselho Municipal or the City Hall. An impressive structure that was completed in the year of 1945, the city hall now houses the chambers of the city's mayor. In the colonial times, the building was the residence of the Portuguese governor.

Although it seems like an austere structure, the City Hall is still quite distinctive because it was constructed in the classical style that was very popular in the 1940s, and it features a portico and massive pillars. Originally, the words “Aqui e Portugal” or “This is Portugal” was inscribed on the facade of the building. As the nation has already gained its freedom from the colonnial Portuguese, this inscription was also removed. As one of the attractions in Maputo that played a significant role in the history of the nation, the city hall is now being used to house the city government.
