The most revered landmark in Maputo is the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Conceiao or the Fort of the Lady of Conception. This fortaleza was constructed in the middle part of the 18th century on top of the fortifications that were built during the earlier times. Dominating the main harbour area of the city, the fort features battlements and cannons as well as a magnificent architecture.

Seen as a squat fortress made of red sandstone, the fortaleza was built between the years 1851 and 1867 on the site of the original stockade which was made out of poles and mud. The fort once housed a museum that glorified the colonial conquests of Portugal, and it now contains the remains of Ngungunhane, who was the last great chief of the tribe of Nguni. The leader ruled the region of Gaza, until friction surfaced from the continued Portuguese and British expansion in the past. Before his death in exile, the ruler was paraded in Lisbon's streets right after his capture. As a great landmark in Maputo, the fortaleza is now known as the State Historical Archive.
