Previously known as the Pracas dos Macmahon, the Praca dos Trabalhadores or the Workers Square is definitely one of the places that you must visit while you are in Maputo. This square holds a dominating statue that is considered one of the most significant monuments in the city.

Standing at an impressive height of 33 feet, the stone statue represents the Greek Goddess of War, Athena. Dedicated to the lives of the Mozambican soldiers who died in World War I, the statue was sculpted out of Portuguese granite by Rui Gameiro right after the war. Shield and sword in hand, Athena is shown staring intently towards the entryway of the city's railway station. Local legend says that the statue represents the woman who single-handedly killed a large cobra that had been victimizing the population at that time. It was said that the woman boiled the snake inside the pot of hot porridge that was balanced on her head.
