The Case do Ferro or the Iron House is considered one of Maputo's attractions because of its unusual design and history. The house was designed by the world renowned Gustave Eiffel, who was responsible for the city's grand railway station, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Statue of Liberty in New York. However, it was deduced that the architect never went to Mozambique by the looks of the Iron House.

Often regarded as an elaborate hot box, the house is made entirely of steel pieces that were bolted together. Originally meant to be the residence of the Portuguese Governor of Mozambique at the time of its inception in 1892, the Iron House never served its purpose because it was far too hot to be used as a home. But, because the house was built in France and then shipped to Mozambique, it can be understood why such a thing had happened. Now, with the magic of airconditioning, the structure is used by the Mozambica Central Office of Historic Monuments, and it is regarded as one of the more popular of Maputo's attractions.
