Like in any other tourist destination, museums are among the attractions that make up the tourism of Maputo. One of these is the National Art Museum of Mozambique. Located in the densely populated yet vibrant district of the Bairro Central, the museum first opened its doors in 1989. In this area, you can find an eclectic mix of structures and people that coexist in a lively environment.

The collection of the National Art Museum is naturally made up of artworks that were done by Mozambican artists. These are in the form of drawings, sculptures, prints, paintings and other mixed media. Ujamaa and Shetani styles of Makonde artworks are also present in the collection. The Mozambican artists who are featured in the museum include Malangatana, Bertina Lopes, Naguib Mucavele, Celestino Tomas, Chissano, Macamo, Chichorro, Victor Sousa, Samate and Estevao Mucavele, among others. The structure that houses the museum also holds a workshop where artists can be seen doing their future masterpieces.
