Aa en Hunze is a new city, formed in 1998. It is made up of four small cities, Anloo, Gieten, Gasselte, and Rolde. The name Aa en Hunze was taken from two small rivers that flow through the city. Drenthe has always been a rather rural area without too many people living there. This is not a common thing in the Netherlands, where most places are more populated. Since Aa en Hunze is mostly a agricultural city, this means that there are a lot of wide open spaces. Tourists are attracted to this type of environment, especially those who enjoy riding bicycles.
