The city of Franeker is the capital of the Franekeradeel municipality in the Friesland region of the Netherlands. It is found on the Van Harinxma Canal about 20 kilometers to the west of the city of Leeuwarden. About 13,000 people live in the city, which was originally founded around the year 800. The oldest street in the city is named Froonacker, a word meaning ‘country of the king’. This is thought to be where the name Franeker came from.
