"Great value for money"

Pros: Great value for money. we stayed in a twin room and it was much larger than expected. the hotel staff were wonderful; very friendly and helpful, and they have a locked luggage room so you can leave your suitcase with them after you check out at 11am, so you don't have the burden of luggage if you've got a late flight.
breakfast was plentiful and we ate well every morning. cornflakes, bread and ham/salami/cheese, apples and oranges, boiled eggs, and it was restocked regularly from 8 till 10.
en suite wasn't massive, but was perfectly adequate.
Cons: The stairs of course are a hassle, but only really when you get there and leave. if you dislike stairs amsterdam really isn't the place to go. visit any old houses - anne frank's, rembrandt's etc. - and you'll find the stairs are more like ladders than what we're used to!
both doors we had to unlock at the hotel were troublesome, and it took us a number of tries before we mastered how to get the catch to stop sticking.
the rooms do have a certain smokey air about them, but you get used to that after seconds.
