We reserved and received a canal view room (126). the room is very big by european standards. it is simply decorated and very clean. it has plenty of furniture such as table, chairs, night stands, and a large cupboard for clothe, so it is more than sufficient.
there are three large windows facing the prisengracht canal which is a major canal, and there is so much to look at day and night - bikes, boats, shops, people, gables.... amsterdam is a city with lots of movements. canal view definitely is worth the extra money.
breakfast is adequate with hard boiled eggs, cheeses, lunch meats, bread, toasts, spreads, juices, cereals, hot chocolate, different kinds of tea, & coffee.
there are two computers (with internet) for guests to use without charge in a quiet computer room. this is a very kind touch considering many hotels in the city charge for internet.
there are also plenty of well decorated, clean public spaces in the hotel for guests to use. you can clearly tell that the owner cares about his hotel and guests and is very service minded.
the location of the hotel is great. we were able to get to all the places (central station, van gogh and rijksmuseum, dam sq., chinatown, portuguese synagogue, nemo, the flea markets, all the pleins, etc.) on foot and never used the tram or bus; again, there is so much to look at and explore in the city, so walking (if you can) is the best and be prepared to be sidetracked. hotel staff is also very helpful in pointing out directions.
