I have stayed in amsterdam on various occasions, usually have stayed in and around dam square and it made a change to stay some distance from the centre. the hotel was nice and clean and easy to find. the apple inn is superbly located for the museum district and the vondelpark.
Was a bit disapointed that the room was not cleaned while there on a 3 night stay.

Good location, 1 minute from tram stop into town. hotel was orderly with helpful staff in reception. room was clean and functional with a double bed even though it was a single room. breakfast was included in my price which was a continental affair with no hot items. price was reasonable although more expensive when paying at time of stay due to the weak pound. quiet surrounds and vondelpark a short stroll away. enjoyed my stay and no complaints.
The bird that ran breakfast was a bit fiesty!!

Apple inn is a 15 minute tram from central station to emmastraat, then 3 minute walk south along the tram track, to hotel (it has huge prominent sign with apples, lit at night). (the south-bound stop by staying on tram *after* emmastraat is only 1 minute's walk). apple inn is a relatively cheap hotel for amsterdam, and is therefore situated off the beaten track. if you prioritise price above location and convenience, then consider this. trams end at 1 am, after that you need a taxi home or a long walk (unless you earlier got a tram to bars at leidseplein stop and had printed a map to hotel).

The hotel was clean, in a great location, and rooms were large.
There was a bit of a confusion about the room i booked when i got there. i asked for a twin but got a double (however this was easily resolved). when booking ensure you e-mail the hotel to inform them of your preference.

The breakfast was more than adequate. cold cuts, cheese, breads, boiled eggs, coffee, cereal, orange juice, and apple juice, yogurt. good value.
The shower nozzle came off and was not replaced, so we showered with a hose in the shower.
the beds are very uncomfortable. soft mattresses. but this is a two star hotel and was a safe place to spend the night.

Pleasant area - near vondelpark and not far by tram to museums and leidseplein.
Majority of hotel guests are in amsterdam for (a) coffeeshops, (b) beer, (c) red light district, or (d) all of the above. whilst i don't have a problem with that, it could be noisy at 2-3am when drunk/high/laid guests staggered back in.

Decent continental breakfast. free wifi (depending on room location). good location and transport links. friendly staff.
Like many independent hotels in amsterdam that are converted from original buildings, the stairs are steep and narrow and there is no lift - not suitable for elderly or disabled. if access is an issue then you would be better looking at a 3-star purpose built hotel.
some of the furniture has seen better days, but for the price you pay its not bad (for amsterdam).

A perfectly decent hotel that was well-located, clean and accommodating.
By bike it's a five to ten minute ride into the centre town. however, i suspect that by foot this could seem quite far.
