The Museum Van Loon and Museum Willet-Holthuysen are examples of canal houses dating from the Dutch Gold Age and have been very well preserved. At least one of these canal houses should be visited as they give a great insight into how the wealthy merchants of the time lived. The historic centre of Amsterdam, Dam Square, is just a short walk from the apartment. Here you will find the Royal Palace, which is where the Queen stays when she is in town, the world famous Madame Tussauds wax museum, Amsterdam’s most prestigious department store in De Bijenkorf and the National Monument. For beer lovers Herengracht is home to a bar that sells only Dutch beer and it is a great place to sample the great beers the country has to offer. The Nine Streets is also close by and a great place to relax with a coffee or beer and watch the locals go about their day. For those destinations a little further afield, the area is well serviced by public transport with Central Station just a short distance away making it fast and easy to get to not just anywhere in the city but the rest of the Netherlands also.
