Concierge needs to be replaced. he is very poor at giving directions and doesn't know enough about your city. as an example he could not tell the hours of operation of your most famous museum

The location could not be better just off leidesplein and there is a little bit of amsterdam's history held within the walls of the american hotel (it's mentioned on the hoponhopoff boat trip red line)! it's fantastically decorated in the public areas - the bar is very luxurious and the lobby is filled with incredible photography of stars through the years. the staff were very helpful too when we had difficulties using the pc and printer in the lobby. the view from the fifth floor rooms was lovely and they have a webcam facility on the tv where you can watch the comings and goings on the corner of leidesplein!
The rooms were nothing special at all and although maybe a little larger than the usual 'dam hotel they are very blandly decorated with almost travel lodge type furniture. the first room we were shown to (and they had details that this break was for our anniversary) was almost completely dark - it looked into someone else's room and across a flat roof! the second room had a balcony and a lovely view of the canal but a tiny bathroom - trade off required. no info was given about the facilities (sauna etc) or breakfast on check in. tea and coffee or toiletries are not topped up and you have to ask if you want the promised bathrobes. in short luxury hotel yes, luxury rooms no.

We loved the location. the hotel staff were wonderful, always willing to answer our questions about amsterdam to helping us figure out the weather. the reception desk always had water both regular and fizzy for hotel guests. maybe we were given an upgrade to the canal side of the hotel because i mentioned it was my birthday. we had a very enjoyable stay at the amsterdam american hotel.
I hate to mention this since the hotel is so wonderful. but, my friend and myself had a hard time getting in and out of the bathtub/shower -- it is very high. other than that no negatives.

Bed was very comfortable and we arrived early and the hotel were able to look after our bags until we could check in.
Room was very noisy, could hear bed squeeking in room above us & traffic outside was very loud, maybe a room on the canal side would be quieter?

Beautiful appearance, beautiful restaurant/dining area, prime location, in one of the main squares. room exceded my expectation as the picture suggested a much smaller one. very quiet considering the location. very pleased overall with the hotel, would consider it again.
At the cost of the accomodation i would expect breakfast to be included in the price

Well located and the staff were very good and very friendly. they provided the most comfortable beds we slept in for our 4 weeks in europe. the concierge looked after us and made our bookings for taxis and also secured our luggage so we could spend the day in amsterdam after checking out. plenty of cafes and attractions nearby. i would certainly recommend this hotel it was perfect.

We loved this hotel and we will definitely stay there again, the location was great and all staff were very friendly. their policy is that they never say no and to be honest they never said no. we were upgraded to a room with a balcony and a canal view which was lovely, they even brought our luggage to our new room. our room was very clean and comfortable and it was cleaned for us every day so we had to do nothing but enjoy our stay there. fantastic we are dying to go back there very soon. i asked the hotel to put us on their mailing list for any special offers that they might have.
Only negative thing is that they charge 19.95 pp for breakfast, but if you book breakfast the night before you can get breakfast for 15eur (still quite pricey in our mind for breakfast every day.
