If you are planning to visit Amsterdam this summer, make sure you don't miss the magnificent Grachtenfestival in August. From 16th to 25th August the historic city centre of Amsterdam - a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2010 - will boast a ten-day festival of classical music in many impressive locations. The Grachtenfestival 2013, which takes ‘Love’ as its theme, will be the 15th edition of this highly successful festival full of ambiance, with over 50,000 expected visitors from the Netherlands and abroad. Aside from its exceptional locations, productions, and programmes, the Grachtenfestival has traditionally provided a stage for young talented musicians, giving them every opportunity to take the next step in their musical careers.
The Grachtenfestival will be held both indoors and outdoors - on pontoons on the canals, on boats, in splendid 17th-century canal houses, and in many other distinctive locations. Crowds gather wherever there is standing space, as in this photo by Ronald Knapp. The complete programme will be announced later in 2013 on the festival’s website: www.grachtenfestival.nl. The organizers ensure that ticket prices are kept affordable, and several open-air concerts are free to the public. Tickets are available via the Grachtenfestival website or at the AUB Ticketshop, from late June.
