 "Dirty and uncomfortable 'hotel' for an exorbitant price!"
I cannot recommend this hotel, it was a terrible experience and it doesn't even deserve to be called 'hotel'! Their description on the website "Hotel Barbacan Amsterdam is the nicest and friendliest hotel of Amsterdam." seems to be a bad joke! The staff wasn't friendly (except of the cat) and they also lied to us, that their credit card reader doesn't work due to the construction work outside, so that we needed to pay cash before seeing the room. Reading the other comments, it seems to be their usual way of betraying their guests. When we finally managed to cope with the steep staircase carrying up our heavy luggages, it smelled like old smoke everywhere and everything in our tiny room was broken and dirty (bedlinen, towels, broken doors and cupboards/shelves in bed- &bathroom, old underwear and socks behind the heating). At night, we even heard the gnawing of a rat or mouse sitting behind the wall under the bed...disgusting! Apart from that, the so-called 'double bed' was barely big enough for 2 people.We were only lucky, that they didn't steal anything from us when we left our luggages for a few hours at the reception after checking out...And all this for the exorbitant price of 120,- Unbelievabe! They took advantage of the rush for queensday...I won't return there for sure!

 "Dirty and cramped"
- the room itself was terrible, with the only shelf falling off the wall, a squeaky bed, a dirty carpet...- we stayed for 2 nights and they did not bother to clean the room or even change the towels after the first night (in fact, they did not come at all to tidy up).- the rooms on the first floor are above the ground-floor disco, which is loud enough to shake the flimsy furniture until 1am.

Cons: Room had mould growing all around the windows and was damp. the public areas were grubby with chipped paintwork

 "Very helpful staff, very clean and tidy room, good location, great little..."
Pros: Very helpful staff, very clean and tidy room, good location, great little budget hotel!
Cons: A bit noisy at night - walls are a little thin, one bathroom per floor. small niggles though, for a cheap place to sleep it doesnt get much better.

 "Welcoming pleasent staff"
Pros: Welcoming pleasent staff. plenty of tourist information. 200yds from tram route (9&14), 10 min gentle walk to night life, quiet street, atm nearby, handful of restaurants and bars nearby.
Cons: Small old towels, no warm drinks facilities in room, try to avoid a room next to stairwell as at times it can be noisy, surprisingly quiet late at night though. steep steps if walking is difficult

Cons: You have to book for breakfast as we went one day and it was not on as nobody had booked- although we hadnt been told previously. our room door was left partly open one day by a cleaner, and therefore accesible for a whole day while we were out- this problem was not sufficiently dealt with as we asked the receptionist to get hold of the manager several times but that never happened. not very clean.

Cons: Yes. its not a 9 minute walk from central station by any means! its ages away! the room was so small you coulnd't swing a cat in it. we were two girls staying there, we had no music on and we were out all night every night at gigs, when we came back we were getting abused by hotel staff for talking in our room! absolutely mental! i would rather sleep on the street than stay there again.

 "The hotel is in a quiet part of amsterdam, but at the same time only about..."
Pros: The hotel is in a quiet part of amsterdam, but at the same time only about a 10 minute walk from the centre which was very convenient. there is also a hotel bar open till late, and we were given a free coctail voucher on our arrival which was nice. the rooms are small but it's not a problem if you're planning on going out to explore in the day anyway.
Cons: The rooms aren't particularly clean, especially the walls, which is a shame because a cleaner look would improve them a lot. the staff are nice in general, although on arrival we had to wait ages for the receptionist to check us in as he was too busy moving his papers about to even say hi. wouldn't reccomend the hotel to anyone who isn't happy walking up and down the stair a lot as there are several floors and no lift.
