Hegra, a small friendly family hotel.
A 17th century merchant house situated on one of the most beautiful canals. Details from this period are still to be found in the building. The herengracht (or Gentlemen's Canal) was originally dug in 1614 as a site for wealthy Amsterdammers to build their imposing houses in which they lived and conducted their business.
More than two centuries later, the hotel Hegra was founded in one of these houses. Hotel Hegra is a non-smoking hotel and has 11 rooms. Luxury rooms with there own facilities, but also basic rooms. Hotel Hegra is located at the Herengracht 269, in the heart of the city centre and nearby many interesting tourist attractions, shops, bars and restaurants. The Herengracht is one of the most beautiful canals of Amsterdam.
The beauty of the city's canals are immediately beyond the door of the hotel. The riches of its museums, its shopping streets, flower market, antique shops together with innumerable other attractions are just some minutes away from the hotel.
How to reach the Hotel Hegra?How to reach the hotel
1) From Schiphol Airport: Every 20 minutes there is a train running from the Airport to Central Station. When you arrive at the airport and you reach the central hall there is a big sign with the train information. The trains to the Central station are running from 05:40 AM to 00:30 AM (go to step 2).
2) From Central Station: From central station take tram 2, 13 or 5, stop at Dam/Raadhuisstraat and from there it is a 5 minute walk to the hotel. The trams in Amsterdam are normally running from: 07:00 AM to 01:00 AM.

Very helpful reception staff, excellent coffee in the morning, exceptional location. 
A slightly larger room would have been nice, but, for the price, i don't suppose i can complain. visitors with limited mobility may have difficulty with the narrow and steep stairs.Anonymous

It was a very comfortable and accommodating stay. the staff was very friendly and helpful and it was a great experience.As most european hotels there was no ac, but we know that when booking. unfortunately a bit of a heat wave pasted through while we were there, but we got by.clayton

You pay for what you get - simple rooms - shared toilets - and- but location is tremendous. the rooms are very basic - no drink making facilities etc. at least there was a simple breaky up till 10 - but again this was very basic. can rent bikes which means you have not rush to get them back - they have a boat which not ready for us would be a great little trip to take. beds good.Not for those who have difficulty climbing stairs - due to the size of hotel you can hear everything going on in the hotel in the morning so no real lie in. you pay what you get for and everything was basicVitols

I very much enjoyed my stay at the hotel hegra. the location is excellent, the building has a lot of charm, and the owner is present all the time to take care of your needs. the breakfast is pleasant, and the cat, othello, visits with you while you're eating. in warm weather there are tables set up along the canal. you can rent bikes. and you certainly get a workout on those stairs!I was there for 7 days, and my bed linens were not changed once. perhaps i should have asked, though. also, the stairs, like many other old houses in amsterdam, are for the able-bodied only!Longbottom

Cosy and compact rooms, tastefully decorated. the beds are the most comfortable that we have ever had in a hotel. the staff are lovely, friendly and very helpful, as is the hotel cat othello!! the breakfasts are just right, eggs, ham, cheese, toast, bread and conserves.
when i return to amsterdam there is no doubting where i will stay!!Not a negative for me, but the stairs are very steep and therefore not suitable for people with walking difficulties.Anonymous

Friendly staff.When i asked for information on tours, excursions etc the only thing that was recommended was a boat tour of the city.
i'm sure there were many other activities going on that they could have informed me about if they had kept themselves well versed.Scott Hunt
