The Keizersgracht with the Prinsengracht and the Herengracht are the three main canals of Amsterdam. These canals were built in the 17th century when Amsterdam was the wealthiest city in the world. The rich merchants built their big monumental houses along these canals. You can still see these buildings with their step gables today. The Leidse Square is a lively part of Amsterdam popular with both tourists and locals, situated south of Amsterdam's central Canal Belt.
