The Damrak can be seen as the red carpet of Amsterdam if you look at it from the Central Station as you main point of view. The Damrak stretches over roughly 1 kilometre from Central Station to the Dam Square. You can find many shops, cafes and restaurants along the route. You will also find a large pier from where you can book your boat trips along the Amsterdam canals. In the old days, large ships offloaded their cargo at the Damrak which was Amsterdam's busiest canal. In 1672 most of the Damrak was filled and large ships couldn't use it anymore.
Most shops you will find on the Damrak are souvenir shops. Normal shops like clothing or electronics can be found on the Kalverstraat which runs parallel behind the Damrak. A must see museum on the Damrak is the Sexmuseum, you will not be bored here. A little further is one of the busiest shops in Amsterdam called the Bijenkorf or "beehive"; in here you can buy almost everything you want. There are many hotels near Amsterdam Damrak and a lot of them are on the Damrak itself. Most of them are cheap hotels, the more luxurious hotels can be found a little further along with the exception of the Victoria hotel which is directly at the beginning of the Damrak.
