Multatuli Hotel Amsterdam

Although my booking confirmation said that room facilities included wireless internet (along with airconditioning, tea and coffee making facility, safe etc.) , on checking in we were told that internet access has to be paid for, at 10 euros per day. i declined to use it. but it was an unpleasant surprise because internet access was one of the factors that had influenced my choice ogf the hotel. there was clearly a mismatch between the hotel's policy and the information available from easytobook.com. the room was uncomfortably small. although there was an elevator, it was still necessary to carry bags up a staircase 10 steps above the street and another 10 odd steps within the hotel as its corridors are at different levels.

The issue that made me unhappy was to discover that the first three nights were charged as expected at 85 euros but the 4th was unexpectedly charged at 119. and i only discovered this by looking through the paperwork. this is quite unacceptable and totally discredits the web-site and the hotel. anyone booking this hotel should beware. at 85 euros a night i wold give this hotel 9.5/10 at 119 euros it must drop a point or two.

Although the bedroom was fine there was a musty smell in the corridors (as though the carpets needed cleaning)

Some noise from other guests talking loudly on the second night which woke us up.

My 3 day stay was excellent.

Room ok but smelt a bit musty. think they try to hide with air freshener which was overwhelming.

I didnt stay in amsterdam long enough!

Rooms were small but we only used room for sleeping and washing.

Walls are a little thin, and the staircase requires concentration.

Staff unwilling to help when room suffered power failure. had to ask to be moved, despite blackout. new room very noisy and uncomfortable for us but would have been ok for singles. would hesitate to give it 3 stars, more like 2.5

The hotel sold blue & white pottery which i bought 2 of them and paid in cash at reception desk but unfortunately did not get a receipt. the fella who was doing receiption packed the items and also the porter helped him. when we were handing in our key when leaving i was informed by another male receiptionist that we had an outstanding balance owing which when queried i realised it was for the 2 pottery oranments purchased - i explained to him that they were already paid for in cash. i explained to him the fella and porter who were doing receiption when purcahsed and was assured not to worry he would sort it out - i was very disappointed to discover when back home that the amount had been charged to my credit card -other words i paid for the 2 pottery items twice - it may not be much in money but in my eyes it is a form of stealing - so if paying for anything make sure you get a receipt and ask for a receipt when leaving verifying that your hotel bill is nil. very disappointed.
