Haarlemmerstraat is a famous shopping street in Amsterdam's center. It runs in line from the Nieuwendijk at the west of the canal to the Korte Prinsengracht. It is then extended to the street Haarlemmerdijk and to Haarlemmerplein, where the street becomes Haarlemmerweg. Haarlemmerstraat is a crowded shopping street. There are two really famous buildings in the Haarlemmerstraat, the West Indies House and Posthoornkerk. In 2012, the combination Haarlemmerstraat / Haarlemmedijk was voted best shopping area in the Netherlands.
Before the urban expansion of 1593, the Haarlemmerpoort was near the Singel. It moved after that to the west on the Spaarndammerdijk to lie within the walls and the first part of Haarlemmerstraat. The Haarlemmerstraat / Haarlemmedijk was built during the construction of the first part of the Canal from 1612.
