The Kalverstraat (calves market in English) is one of Amsterdam's busiest shopping streets. Here you will find various shops ranging from the usual Hema store to the biggest CD shop in town, the infamous Fame. It's featuring many expensive shops with famous brands, for clothing, books, video games and jewelry. You will also find a small shopping mall, the Kalvertoren, with almost 30 shops dedicated mainly to fashion and casual wear.
The street starts in Dam Square and after 700-800 meters ends near the Munttoren at Muntplein. This tower was once a gate in the medieval city walls. After the walls were built, the street between the Spui and Munttoren came to be known as Byndewyck. This part of the neighborhood, from 1486 until 1629, had a cattle market. Later on, the street got the name Kalverstraat, after the cattle market.
The area surrounding Kalverstraat is an excellent place to find nice hotels, places to eat and a variety of tourist attractions.
