The Amsterdam Central Station is the only train station located in the inner city. The Amsterdam Central Station backs onto the Amsterdam harbor, and is literally surrounded by canals. The station is also just minutes from Schiphol Airport, which makes travelling through the city and to the airport very easy. One of the first things that you will notice when you arrive at Amsterdam Central Station, is the thousands of bicycles that are parked around the station. Most local people ride bikes around the city since the area is so flat and so densely populated.
Bikes are the best option for getting around the area, preventing pollution and saving space. If you are an adventurous person, you may wish to consider renting a bike at the station and using it to get around Amsterdam. This is a great way to see the sites and it allows you to stop at any spots of interest. All international trains arrive and depart from the Amsterdam Central Station. On the north side of Amsterdam you will find the North Sea Canal. Big boats will pass along all day. On the south side, Amsterdam Central Station is directly facing the centre of Amsterdam. On the left, you will have the famous Red Light District. Close to the city center you can have a walk on the beautiful neighbourhood called the Jordaan and through the centre you will enter the biggest shopping street of Amsterdam called the Kalverstraat.
